The chemical industry is despite its great achievements and improvement of the overall quality of life and industrial productivity, not fully understood and appreciated by the public. Innovations in packaging, transportation, aircraft and spacecraft etc. are only some industries that rely on the continuous advancement of the chemical industry.
According to PWC, the chemical industry has more than doubled their sales over the last decade, reaching 5.2 trillion USD in 2013. To succeed in this competitive environment, companies need to focus their strategic thinking about adapting and refining their business models and manufacturing imprints. Furthermore, it is essential for them to identify growth opportunities in emerging markets and utilise the potential of digital technologies to capitalize on the next wave of value creation (PWC, 2015).
Just like many other industries, the improvement of technology is resulting in compelling changes the industry is currently going through. As reported by PWC, a majority of firms competing in the chemical industry will transform their business models to adapt to the latest technological advancements in the areas of performance and agility, customer interference, innovation and organisation (2016).
